It was announced yesterday that Fedor Emelianenko, the number one ranked heavyweight in the world, had finally signed a deal with a top promotion. I was hoping it was with the UFC but instead it was with Strikeforce.
I'll admit, I was a little disappointed. I wanted to see Fedor fight in the UFC because I believe his best competition is in the UFC. That won't happen but I can live with him fighting in Strikeforce because at least he will still fight in the states.
Even though I think Fedor would have better competition in the UFC, I disagree with those that say he doesn't have good competition in Strikeforce. Brett Rogers, Fabricio Werdum, and Alistair Overeem are good heavyweights capable of beating Fedor. Just because they are not known or in the UFC doesn't mean these guys suck.
Here's what all 3 bring to the table:
- Brett Roger - An undefeated fighter with powerful hands who has finished all of his opponents. Recently beat top ten HW Andrei Arlovski. Strikeforce version of Shane Carwin
- Fabricio Werdum - A bjj fighter with improved striking who up until recently had never been finished. Is now training with Chute Boxe.
- Alistair Overeem - A fighter with great striking skills and good ground skills. Has struggled in the past against top competition but has looked very impressive since moving to heavyweight.
Like I said before, just because they are not known or in the UFC doesn't mean these guys suck. These are good fighters. Dana has even expressed interest in Overeem in his UFC 93 Vlog and Werdum would still be in the UFC if he had took a pay cut. These guys will provide a good challenge for Fedor. Will they beat him, we'll have to wait and see.
