Anderson Silva is the current UFC MW champion and is thought by many to be the best fighter in the world. He has fought and dominated some of the best in the game such as Rich Franklin(2x), Nate Marquardt, and Dan Henderson. He basically dominated the MW division except in his last two fights.
It was those last two fights that prompted the UFC to move Silva up to the toughest division in the UFC, the LHW division. The UFC needed a fighter who could push and motivate Silva to be that dominating force he once was. The UFC called upon Forrest Griffin, the UFC's "Modern Day Rocky."
Griffin, the former UFC LHW Champ, is an aggressive fighter who brings it each and every second he is in the cage. He doesn't know what quit is. He may not be as skilled as others but he makes up for that with hard work and a heart the size of Texas. This is the type of fighter that will motivate Silva to perform at his best.
I call Griffin "The Modern Day Rocky" because like Rocky, he is expected to put up a decent showing but eventually lose. The UFC tried to do it before with Mauricio "Shogun" Rua but Forrest shocked everyone, including myself, when he finished the fighter I once thought was the best in the world. It happened again with Quinton "Rampage" Jackson, who was expected to dominate Griffin but Griffin showed the world once again what hard work and heart can do for you in a fight.
Griffin has thrived when people count him out. He wasn't expected to win the first "The Ultimate Fighter" but he did it. He wasn't expected to beat Shogun but he did that. He wasn't expected to win the UFC LHW Title but he did that, too. Griffin is the top of fighter who performs at his best when the odds are against him.
Anderson Silva is a great fighter who will be tough to beat but I honestly wouldn't be surprised if Griffin pulled out another victory that many don't think he will get. All I really hope for is a great fight.
