This upcoming weekend is huge for women's mma as Gina Carano and Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos headline a Strikeforce event. To my recollection, this will be the first time women headline a mma event for a worldwide promotion. Women's mma has really come a long way in a short time but if it wants to continue it's path towards mainstream exceptance, Gina Carano needs to win this weekend.
It's safe to say that right now, Gina Carano is the face of women's mma. I believe she is the main reason women's mma has become more popular over the past year. However, it's has nothing to do with her talent, it's because she is very attractive and brings sex appeal to a male dominated sport.
Let's face it, in order for women's sports to have any mainstream success in America, there must be some sort of sex appeal. I didn't make the rules, so don't get mad at me saying that. Unfortunately, that's just the way it is in America.
I wouldn't watch women's tennis if it weren't for players like Maria Sharapova and Ana Ivanovic. I wouldn't have paid attention to women's softball if it wasn't for Jennie Finch. I didn't watch women's boxing until Laila Ali starting fighting. Since she retired, I don't even watch it anymore. I don't really like watching women's sports unless there is an attractive woman participating in it and I bet others agree with me.
That's why I think it's very important for Gina Carano to win this weekend. She has the talent and the sex appeal to help women's mma become more excepted. As long as she keeps winning, she will do that. Sex sells.
