Last night, Strikeforce put on another event on Showtime and once again, they delivered with some exciting fights and finishes. Even though I enjoyed the fights, I think Strikeforce may have taken a step back because of their production and commentating.
Let's start with their production. I enjoy the entertainment part of an event, sometimes more than the fights themselves. Some may not really care about it but that is one thing I look forward to when I watch an event. I enjoy seeing the openings, the pre-fight interviews, the fighter introductions, etc., everything that goes with an event. What can I say, I've been spoiled by Pride, Dream, Sengoku, and the UFC. I just felt Strikeforce didn't deliver in this department.
Another thing I was disappointed in was not being able to see some of the undercard fights when some of the main card fights ended quickly. That's one thing that the UFC does very well. Strikeforce is missing out on an opportunity to showcase young up and comers.
One thing I didn't think would make a difference but it really does is commentating. Gus Johnson is a horrible mma commentator. Johnson obviously doesn't know much about mma and it seemed like he was making stuff up as the night went on. I'm no expert myself but any fan who has watched mma more than a dozen times can do a better job than Johnson. He needs to stick to what he does best, basketball and football. Strikeforce needs someone like Mauro Ranallo who understands the sport.
They may have just started doing live events but this was their fifth time on Showtime and I would think they would be better by now. It just seemed like Strikeforce was all over the place which is why I think Strikeforce took a step back.
Thoughts?
