UFC 101 takes place this Saturday and I think it could possibly be one of the best cards of the year. The card is filled with established veterans as well as up and comers. Not star-studded as other cards but each fight has a chance at being "fight of the night."
The night starts off with Josh Neer vs. Kurt Pellgrino. Both fighters are coming off impressive wins and another win moves them right up the ranks. Both are willing to do anything to win and that's why expect this match to be early consideration for "fight of the night."
The next fight is between Ricardo Almeida vs. Kendall Grove. Not an intriguing match up at first thought but both have shown improvement in their last bouts. This fight is very important to Grove because up until recently, he was on the chopping block. He basically has to keep winning to keep his job. Grove is always involved in some exciting bouts whether he wins or loses. I expect this fight to be closely contested.
The third fight features Ultimate 7 winner Amir Sadollah finally making his debut against Johny Hendricks, who is also making his UFC debut. I really don't know what to expect from this fight because I don't know what both bring to the table. All I do know is that Sadollah can take a beating and pull submissions out of his ass and Hendricks is a good wrestler who wants to stand and bang. Hopefully, it just turns out to be a good fight.
The co-main event of the evening features MW Champion Anderson Silva vs. former LHW Champion Forrest Griffin in what I expect to be full of fireworks. Silva is coming off of 2 lackluster performances and looking to rebound with an impressive showing. Griffin is looking to rebound from losing his title in a fight I actually had him winning. Griffin likes to bring it no matter what and is always involved in exciting fights. This fight should be know different and I expect someone to get knocked out.
Then, the main event of the evening features LW Champion BJ Penn vs. Kenny Florian. BJ is trying to come back from a devastating defeat to GSP and prove to everyone that he still deserves to mentioned among the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world. Kenny is a new fighter and has improved greatly since he lost to Sean Sherk some 3 years ago. This may be his last shot at the belt and will do anything in this fight to win. This is a fight I look forward to seeing because both look focus and ready to give their best efforts.
I am very hyped up for this weekend, what about you?
